Q

What are two types of OWS

A

Static OWS uses coalescing filters which allow water to accumulate and drop to the bottom of the separator to allow the oil to rise to the top and be syphoned off

Centrifugal OWS uses centrifugal force and a gravity disc to throw water and contaminants to the side to clean oil (purifier)

Q

What are some legislation surrounding the OWS

A

Required by any vessel over 400GT and 150GT for tankers
Must be fitted with 15ppm monitor
Ships must be fitted with a dirty oil tank which the OWS can suck from as it is illegal to suck directly from the bilge
Must have an accompanying ORB

Q

What are the conditions for discharging from the OWS

A

The ship is proceeding en route

The oily mixture is processed through an oil filtering equipment meeting the requirements of regulation 14 of this annex

The oil content of the effluent without dilution does not exceed 15 parts per million

The oily mixture does not originate from cargo pump-room bilges on oil tankers

The oily mixture, in case of tankers, is not mixed with oil cargo residues.

Q

Where and when can sewage be discharged from the vessel

A

Under 3 miles from the shore you can only discharge sewage that has been through a 3 stage digesting plant

Between 3 and 12 miles from the shore you can also discharge sewage that has been treated with a marine sanitation device but only if you are going a minimum of 4 knots and are en route from one port to another

Over 12 miles from the shore you can now discharge raw sewage, but again only if you are going a minimum of 4 knots and are en route from one port to another
