MARPOL Flashcards
What are the six MARPOL annexes
Oil pollution
Noxious liquids
Hazardous substances in packaged form
Sewage pollution
Garbage pollution
Air pollution
What are three things a vessel needs to comply with MARPOL annex I
OWS
ORB
SOPEP
What are two types of OWS
Static OWS uses coalescing filters which allow water to accumulate and drop to the bottom of the separator to allow the oil to rise to the top and be syphoned off
Centrifugal OWS uses centrifugal force and a gravity disc to throw water and contaminants to the side to clean oil (purifier)
What are some legislation surrounding the OWS
Required by any vessel over 400GT and 150GT for tankers
Must be fitted with 15ppm monitor
Ships must be fitted with a dirty oil tank which the OWS can suck from as it is illegal to suck directly from the bilge
Must have an accompanying ORB
What are the conditions for discharging from the OWS
The ship is proceeding en route
The oily mixture is processed through an oil filtering equipment meeting the requirements of regulation 14 of this annex
The oil content of the effluent without dilution does not exceed 15 parts per million
The oily mixture does not originate from cargo pump-room bilges on oil tankers
The oily mixture, in case of tankers, is not mixed with oil cargo residues.
What information should be entered into the ORB
Date
Operational code
Time of operations start/stop
The positions of the vessel at the beginning and end for discharge overboard
Quantities retained in relevant tanks after discharge
Name and signature of officer in charge
Signature of master on every page
Can you discharge the OWS in special areas
Yes, but only if your OWS is fitted with an alarm and automatic shutoff for the 15ppm meter
What are the special areas affected by annex I
The Mediterranean sea area
The Baltic sea area
The Black sea area
The Red sea area
The Gulf area
The Gulf of Aden area
The Antarctic Area
The North-West European Waters
Oman area of the Arabian Sea
Southern South African Water
IMO sets these standards
Where and when can sewage be discharged from the vessel
Under 3 miles from the shore you can only discharge sewage that has been through a 3 stage digesting plant
Between 3 and 12 miles from the shore you can also discharge sewage that has been treated with a marine sanitation device but only if you are going a minimum of 4 knots and are en route from one port to another
Over 12 miles from the shore you can now discharge raw sewage, but again only if you are going a minimum of 4 knots and are en route from one port to another
Can you discharge sewage in special areas
No, it is strictly prohibited
What are the special areas affected by annex IV
The Baltic sea
IMO sets these standards
What does annex VI say about refrigerants
They are ozone depleting substances
What would you do if you detected a leak on your refrigerant system
Shut down affected unit
Isolate valves
Organise a repair by a qualified person
Record in log book
Inspect before entering unit back into service
What is the maximum allowed fuel sulphur content level as per annex VI
0.5%
What is the maximum allowed fuel sulphur content for special areas
0.1%
