What is STEAL? What is it’s purpose?
The STEAL mnemonic is used to analyse and assess the character traits and physical traits found in a character. When not obviously shown in a story, the STEAL method can be an easy way of identifying how the character’s personality is formed.
What are “Character Traits”?
Character traits are parts of a characters personality. They can be positive or negative, based on the situation. E.G: Caring, Curios, Disciplined, Aggressive.
What are Character Traits divided into?
Personality Traits: A narrator tells the story but reveals only one character’s thoughts and feelings.
Physical Traits: What we see with our eyes that reveals the characters appearance
Explain the STEAL acronym.
S-Speech T-Thoughts E-Effect on others A-Actions L-Looks
What is “Speech”
What does the character say? How do they say it? What is their tone? Their word choice
What is “Thoughts”?
What does the character think? What do we learn from their thoughts?
What is “Effects on others”?
What is this characters effect on others? How do they interact with other characters?
What is “Actions”?
What does this character do? How do they behave? What can we learn from them?
What is “Looks”?
What does this character look like? What can we learn from how they present themselves to others?
