What is the RACE(S)strategy, and it’s purpose?
The RACE(S) strategy is a mnemonic device that helps write open-ended constructed responses in comprehensional questions. It’s purpose is to help increase critical thinking,investigative,and inferential skills.
What are the listed meanings of “RACE”
R-Restate the question A-Answer the question C-Cite evidence to support your answer E-Explain how the evidence support's your answer (S-Sum it up)
Explain “R-Restate the question”
- Turn the question into a statement to introduce your paragraph.
- Read the question or prompt.
- Underline or highlight the key words.
Rewrite the question as a statement.
Explain “A-Answer the question”
-Keep in mind that there may be more than one part to the question.
-Answer the question. If there is more than
one part to the question, make sure to answer ALL parts.
Don’t forget to answer ALL questions
Explain “C-Cite evidence to support your answer
-Support your answer evidence from the text. If you use a direct quotation, use
quotation marks. Make sure to introduce your evidence with a phrase like:
“For example,” “According to the text,” “The author states that…” etc.
- Use evidence to support your answer.
- Quote from the text.
Explain “E-Explain how the evidence supports your answer”
- Elaborate on why your textual evidence helps you prove your point. Use phrases like: “this example shows how…,” “this quotation proves that…,” etc.
- Explain your answer.
- Elaborate and make your answer longer.
Explain “S-Sum it up”
- Conclude your answer
- Link it to your topic sentence, but use different words
