What is a cross sectional study?
where all of the data is collected at a single time point e.g. in a survey
What is a case control study?
participants are selected based on outcome, then assessed retrospectively to determine exposure e.g. look at people who have lung cancer and ask them if they smoked in the past
When is it useful to do a case control study?
when the outcome is rare
What is a prospective cohort study?
select participants based on exposure then follow them up over time to assess for an outcome
What is an ecological study?
unit of analysis is a group rather than an individual
What is the priority in phase I clinical trials?
to determine safety in humans and to determine appropriate dose for phase II
What is the priority in phase II clinical trials?
to determine activity of the drug
What is the priority in phase III clinical trials?
to determine efficacy
What is the priority in phase IV clinical trials?
to see if results are true in real world setting and to see if rare events occur
What is allocation concealment?
don’t know which group the participant has been allocated to
