A

occurs when a person has a characteristic that is less common
most obvious way to define something as ‘normal’ or ‘abnormal’
ie IQ and Intellectual Disability Disorder
average IQ is 100
in a normal distribution, around 68% have an IQ from 85 to 115
only 2% have an IQ below 70 - very ‘abnormal’, liable to receive a diagnosis of intellectual disability disorder

real world application

A

strength
useful in clinical practice for diagnosis of intellectual disability disorder
or use in beck depression index - score of 30+ (only top 5% of respondents) indicates severe depression

unusual characteristics can be positive

A

limitation
having an IQ over 130 is rare but is not regarded as such - someone with very low scale on beck depression index would not be regarded as unusual
