Q

What are some differences between LA and RA?

A

Most of LA is smooth - the pectinate muscles of LA are confined to the inner surface of the left auricle.

LA: the entrance of the L and R, superior and inferior pulmonary veins

RA muscular and smooth intercaval surface is separated by crista terminalis.

RA will have entrances of the IVC and SVC, and the coronary sinus

Q

What is the septomarginal trabecula?

A

Trabaculae muscle extending from inferior portion of the IV septum, to the base of the Anterior papillary muscle of the R ventricle.

Contains the R bundle branch of the AV bundle

Q

What are chordae tendinae?

A

Chordae tendiniae are tendinous cords that connect the papillary muscles to the leaflets of valves

Q

What are some differences between LV and RV?

A

RV has 3 papillary muscles: anterior, posterior and septal

RV contains the moderator band (septoarginal trabecula) that contains the right bundlebranch of the AV bundle

LV has 2 papillary muscles: anterior and posterior

LV wall tends to be thicker ( ) than RV wall ( )

The chordae tendineae of the LV are finer and more numerous than those of the RV

No supraventricular crest, or conus arteriosus (infundibulum) in LV

Q

What is the significance of the papillary muscles in terms of the conduction system of the heart?

A

The papillary muscles are stimulated first, so that they tense and tightly close the MV/TV to prevent regurgitation during ventricular systole
