What are the indications for use
A
- 1o prevention CVD (>40yrs)
- 2o prevention CVD
- 1o hyperlipidaemia

What are the mechanisms of action
A
- Reduce serum cholesterol evels
- Inhibit HMG CoA reductase enzyme involved in making cholesterol
- Decrease cholesterol production by liver & inc clearance of LDL from blood
Also indirectly reduce triglycerides & slightly inc HDL levels.

What are the side effects
A
- Headache
- GI disturbance
- serious effects on muscles (myopathy, aches, rhabdomyolysis)
- rise in liver enzymes (ALT)-drug induced hepatitis

What are the contra-indications
A
- Caution hepatic impairment
- reduced renal impairment
- avoid in pregnancy/ breastfeeding

What are the interaction
A
inhibitors (AMIODARONE, ITRACONAZOLE, MACROLIDES, PROTEASE INHIBITORS, DILTIAZEM), AMLODIPINE
