static electricity Flashcards
conductor
material that lets electrical current move through it (paperclip)
insulator
material that doesn’t let electrical current move through it (plastic, rubber)
friction
when two objects are rubbed together and electrons are transferred to the other object (uncharged cloth + uncharged plastic rod)
electrostatic series
a list of materials that help determine which material will be positively or negatively charged when rubbed together
charging by induction
a method that temporarily changes an object without touching it
charging by contact (conduction)
when a charged object comes in touch with a neutral object, elections move from high to low concentrations
discharging objects
to get rid of any excess charges
grounding
when a conductor provides a pathway to direct excess electrons to/from the ground
spark
a quick release of electrons between two objects that are oppositely charged (lightning)
lightning
when the negative charge at the base of the clouds induces a positive charge on the ground
lightning rods
when the lightning hits the rod, the electric charges are carried through a cable down to the ground
law of electric charges (attraction + repulsion)
- opposite charges attract each other
- charged objects attracted neutral objects
- like charges repel each other
