How does static occur?

Only electrons move.

If an object gains electrons = negative
If an object loses electrons = positive

Electrons move because of friction

How can a negative object attract a neutral one?

The negative object will repel the electrons to the other side of the atom in the neutral object. It will attract to the positive nucleus. We say the neutral object has an INDUCED CHARGE.

What are the advantages of using charged spray painting?

Advantage 1
The object is made one charge eg positive.
The paint is made the opposite charge eg negative.
Opposites attract sot the paint will attract to the car
This reduces waste.

Advantage 2
Every droplet has the same charge as each other
Like charges repel so each droplet will repel away from each other
Giving a nice even coat.

What are the dangers of static?

The problem with static is it can jump causing a spark.
eg when a plane builds up electrons or when a fuel pipe builds up electrons:

*Electric shock – burns and death
*The spark can jump and ignite flammable liquids

What do earth wires do, and give an example.

Earth wires allow electrons to flow through them to the ground discharging. Earth wires are always made of metals (conductor).

Example - When a plane comes into land, or when a truck is refueled we always attach an Earth wire to it so the excess electrons can flow to the ground discharging the plane/truck. Preventing a spark and preventing it igniting flammable liquid.
