1
Q

Solids and liquids cannot be compressed (squashed to a smaller volume). Why is this?

A

Because the particles are already very close together.

Q

Gases can be compressed (squashed to a smaller volume). Why is this?

A

There is a lot of space between the particles, so they can be pushed closer together.

Q

A change of state occurs when:

A

• a solid melts to a liquid or a liquid freezes to a solid
• a liquid boils to form a gas or a gas condenses to form a liquid
OR
• a solid sublimates ( sublimation) ( heating ) to form a gas or a gas deposits ( deposition ) ( cooling ) to form a solid

Q

Explain how can Solid turn into a liquid

A

When a solid is heated, the particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate faster. When enough heat energy is applied, the particles gain enough kinetic energy to overcome the strong forces of attraction. The temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid is called the melting point.

simplified:

Solid, heated up = kenetic energy ( vibrates faster ) , overcoming strong force of attraction => liquid ( melting point )

Q

Explain how liquid can turn into gas

A

When heat energy is applied to a liquid, the particles gain more kinetic energy until they have enough kinetic energy to overcome the forces of attraction and turn into a gas. The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas is called the boiling point.

Simplified:

Liquid, heated up = kenetic energy ( vibrates faster ) , overcoming strong force of attraction => gas ( boiling point )
