states of matter + mixtures pg 34-41 Flashcards
in order from the strongest to the weakest explain the forces of attraction in liquids , gases and solids
solid, gas, liquid
describe the arrangement of the particles and the forces between them in gas
very weak forces of attraction, constant random movement, they only interact when they collide
what does the scientific definition of pure mean?
a substance that is made of only one element or compound
explain why and orange juice carton saying 100% pure is not scientifically correct
because it will be made up of more than one element or compound
if I was to test the melting point of pure hydrochloric acid would I expect the melting point to be over a range of temperatures or one sharp melting point?
precise and sharp melting point
a student used fractional distillation to separate three different liquids, A with a boiling point of 54 degrees, B with a boiling point of 117 degrees or C with a boiling point of 39 degrees which liquid sample would be collected in the first fraction?
C, because it has the lowest boiling point so it would evaporate first
explain the process of crystallisation
- you gently heat the solution to evaporate some of the water
- when you begin to see crystals leave the solution to cool
- now filter the solution so that only the crystals remain
- leave the crystals in a warm place to dry
