States Of Matter and energy changes Flashcards
What do liquid atoms look like?
These are weaker. The particles are slightly further apart and can move around each other. No regular pattern like a solid. No fixed shape or volume.
What do solid atoms look like?
They are held closely together by strong forces of attraction. The particles cannot move over each other but vibrate back and forth
What do gas atoms look like?
The particles are very far apart and can move about in all directions. No pattern.
What does sublimation mean?
Going from solid to gas
Melting and evaporation; endothermic or exothermic?
Endothermic
Freezing and condensing:exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic: freezing is exothermic because : new bonds are made to go from liquid to solid. Water gets colder. The surrounding area gets hotter as the liquid freezes.
What is endothermic?
The bonds in the reactant are Brocken. This requires energy to be absorbed. The temperature of the surroundings decrease.
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration. The molecules spread out.
What is exothermic?
New bonds in the products are formed. This releases energy. It makes chemical bonds in products. The temperature of the surroundings increases. Heat loss from chemical system.
How can you speed up diffusion?
You heat the particles. The particles vibrate more.
Why is diffusion slower in a liquid?
Because it has more particles to bump off of.
Is bond breaking endothermic or exothermic?
Endothermic
Is making bonds endothermic or exothermic?
Exothermic
