States of Matter Flashcards
Properties of a Solid
Rigid, Cannot be compressed, Fixed shape, Fixed volume and cannot flow
Properties of a Liquid
Not Rigid, No fixed shape, Fixed volume, cannot be compressed and can flow
Properties of gasses
Not rigid, no fixed shape, no fixed volume, can be compressed and can flow
Melting
Solid to liquid
Freezing
Liquid to solid
Evaporating
Liquid to gas
Condensing
Gas to liquid
Sublimation
Solid to gas
Deposition
Gas to solid
What happens to solid molecules when heated
Molecules gain energy, vibrate more, strong forces are overcome and molecule starts to move
What happens to Liquid molecules when heated
Molecules move faster as they gain energy, fast moving molecules will overcome the strong forces of attraction and escape
What happens to gas molecules when heated
Molecules have speed and energy to overcome forces of attraction and escape each other, molecules break away in big bubbles of gas
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until they are evenly spread
What does diffusion depend on
Depends on the random movement of particles
Why is diffusion slower in liquids than in gases
Because in liquids the particles are not as free as they are in gasses
