States Of Matter Flashcards
What is matter
Anything that takes up space and has mass
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Particle theory
The idea that everything is made form small particles
Types of matter
Solid, liquids and gases
Solids have:
Definite shape, mass, volume. Incompressible, doesn’t flow, vibrates
Liquids have:
No definite shape and volume. Easily compressible, slide over each other. Definite mass
Gases have:
No definite shape, volume. Easily compressible. Definite mass. Far apart from each other. Diffuses info available spaces
Diffusion
The spreading of particles form an area of high concentration, to low concentration
Factors that affect the speed of diffusion
Temp, size and state
Why does diffusion not happen in solids?
Because they don’t move
Solid to liquid is:
Melting
Liquid to gas:
Boiling
What is boiling point
Temp a liquid changes to a gas at
Physical change
No new substance is formed
Liquid to solid:
Freezing
