Ch 22- The Earth Flashcards
Layers of the earth
Crust, mantle and the core
What is the crust
The outer layer of the earth
Mantle
Made of solid rock and liquid called magma
Outer core
Iron and nickel
Inner core
Iron and nickel
Plate tectonics
The movement of the crust
Seismology
The study of earthquakes and volcanoes
Types of rocks
Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic
Igneous
Form when magma breaks through the surface of the crust during a volcano. When it cools the magma becomes solid eg granite
Sedimentary
Formed by layers of rock particles and dead plant and animal material eg limestone
Metamorphic
Formed when igneous and sedimentary rocks change into harder rocks due to high temps and pressure eg quartzite
Rocks are changed by
Weathering, erosion , heat and pressure
The nutrient cycle
Shows the cycle of matter and minerals thorough the living and non living parts of the earth
The carbon cycle
Explains how carbon is recycled through the earth
Carbon sink
Anything that takes carbon out of the atmosphere
Carbon source
Anything that releases carbon into the atmosphere
The nitrogen cycle
Explains how nitrogen is recycled through the earth
The water cycle
Describes the changes that water undergoes as it moves through the earth
