States Of Matter Flashcards
1
Q
What state something is at a certain temperature depends on what?
A
How strong the forces of attraction are between the particles of the material depend on
- The material (structure of substance and types of bonds)
- Temperature
- Pressure
2
Q
Describe 3 properties of a solid
A
- Strong forces of attraction between particles, holds them close together in fixed positions to form a regular lattice arrangement
- Particles don’t move so they kept a definite shape and volume and don’t flow
- Particles vibrate- hotter the solid the more it vibrates
3
Q
Describe 3 properties of liquid
A
- Weak force of attraction, randomly arranged, free to move, tend to stick closely together
- Definite volume but don’t keep definite shape, can flow
- Constantly moving with random motion, the hotter the liquid, the faster they move, causes liquid to expand when heated
4
Q
Describe 3 properties of gases
A
- Force of attraction is very weak, free to move and are far apart, the particles in gases travel in straight lines
- Don’t keep a definite shape or volume and will always fill containers
- Move in random motion, the hotter, the faster they move, pressure increases
5
Q
What are he limitations or particle theory
A
Reality, part makes aren’t spheres, they’re atoms, ions or molecules
They don’t show the forces between the particles, so we don’t know if they’re strong
6
Q
What does a state symbol tell you
A
The physical state of the reactants or products
7
Q
What does aq mean
A
Dissolved in water
