Ionic Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding
When a metal and a non metal react together, the metal atom loses electrons to form a positively charged ion and the non metal gains these electrons to form a negatively charged ion
These oppositely charged ions are strongly attracted to one another by electrostatic forces
What can electron transfer be represented by
Dot and cross diagram
How does sodium chloride form
The sodium atom gives up its outer electron becoming Na + ion
The chlorine atom gains the electron becoming Cl- ion
How is magnesium oxide formed (MgCl2)
The magnesium loses two outer electrons to form Mg2+
The two chlorine atoms pick up one electron each becoming two Cl-
How sodium oxide formed (Na2O)
Two sodium atoms lose their single outer electron becoming two Na+ ions
The oxygen atoms picks up the two electrons becoming O2- ion
