States Of Matter Flashcards
What is it called when a gas turns to a liquid?
Condensation
What is it called when a solid turns into a gas?
Sublimation
What’s it called when a liquid turns to a solid?
Freezing
Gas–> solid?
Sublimation
Solid–>liquid?
Melting
Liquid–>gas?
Evaporation
What’s the difference between evaporation and boiling?
Evaporation occurs at the surface of the liquid where the more energetic particles can break free from neighbouring particles whereas in boiling occurs through a liquid and the bubbles of vapour formed within the liquid then rise to the surface. And evaporation can occur at any temperature of the liquid but boiling only occurs at the boiling point of the liquid.
What’s a similarity of evaporation and boiling?
They are both a change of state from liquid to gas.
Describe solid particle arrangement
Held together closely by strong bonds of attraction.
The particles cannot move over each other but vibrate back and forth about a fixed position. Solids are dense.
Describe a liquid particle arrangement
The forces of attraction between the molecules in a liquid all weaker than in a solid. The particles are slightly further apart and are able to flow and move around each other.
Describe a gas particle arrangement
There are very weak forces of attraction between gas particles. They are moving rapidly and randomly.
What happens to the particles when a substance is cooled?
The particles gradually lose energy and move slower as the temperature falls.
What is filtering?
Separating an insoluble substance from a liquid.
What is crystallisation?
When a solid appears as the solution cools
What is fractional distillation ?
Used to separate a mixture of two liquids
