States Of Matter Flashcards
Mass
Is the amount of matter in an object
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Diffusion
is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to An area of low concentration
Solids particles
The participles in a solid are closely packed together. Solids are a definite shape They have a definite volume Solids can't be compressed Solids can't flow
Liquid particles
The particles in a liquid are close to each other but are free to move past each other. They have no definite shape They have a definite volume They can't be compressed They can flow
Gas particles
In gas the particles are free to move where ever they want. They have no definite shape They have no definite volume They can be compressed They can flow
Energy
In order for a substance to change state (from a solid to a liquid, or liquid to gas) it needs heat energy
Melting point
When both the solid and liquid state exist together (changing from a solid to a liquid)
Boiling point
Is when evaporation begins to happen throughout the liquid (changing from a liquid to a gas )
Condensation
Is the changing of a gas to a liquid
Distalition
Used to spearate two liquids with different boiling points such as alcohol (boils at 78) and water (boils at 100).also used to separate a soluble solid
Chromatography
Used to separate a mixture of a dissolved substance in a solution e.g the different colours in a black marker
