States Of Matter Flashcards
Do substances move from one phase to another by physical means or chemical means?
Physical means
As temperature rises, does matter move to a more active or less active state?
More active
What type of change would change the way a substance (such as water) acted, eventually making it a different substance (not water), something completely new
A chemical change
When the pressure surrounding a substance goes up what happens to the freezing point?
The freezing point goes up
When the temperature goes down, do most solids shrink in size, or expand in size?
Shrink in size. Water is an exception to this.
What type of changes happen on a molecular level?
Chemical changes.
What type of changes are about energy and states of matter?
Physical changes.
What type of forces, also called sticky forces, work to hold the molecules of a liquid together?
Cohesive forces
Why do some molecules of a liquid evaporate when it is not even at the temperature of the boiling point?
Because not all of the molecules in a liquid actually have the same energy.
What is the word used to describe gases that are usually found as liquids?
Vapor
Which of the following states of matter are easiest to compress with very little pressure: is it liquids, solids, or gases?
Gases
This state of matter is a lot like gases, but the atoms are different because they are made up of free electrons and ions of the element
Plasma
This states of matter consists of atoms that are super-unexcited and super cold.
