Particle theories of Solids

A
  1. Particles are arranged in a fixed pattern
  2. Particles stick together strongly and packed tightly
  3. Particles don’t move, they vibrate in place

Q

What happens when u heat solid in terms of particles

A

Solids expands. When the solid is heated heat energy is transferred to particles and vibrate more and take up more space.

8
Q

What happens when u start melting solids

A

Particles vibrate more with more heat energy added and then the attractive forces between particles are broken.letting the particles to move freely.

Q

What happens when u start heating liquids

A

Particles move more as more heat energy is transferred and the weak attractive forces between the particles are broken allowing them to move freely and escape as gas

Q

What happens when liquid freezes

A

When liquid particles lose heat, they cannot move and flow anymore. They can only vibrate in a fixed position.

Q

What is precipitation?

A

When condensed water in cloulds become too heavy for air to hold them they fall back to earth as rain.
Examples: Rain, snow, hail and sleet

16
Q

What is perculation?

A

Water which moves downwards through the soil.

17
Q

What are atoms?

A

They are tiny pieces of matter.

18
Q

What are elements?

A

A substance made of just ONE type of atom

19
Q

Elements can be divided into two type which are?

A

Metal and Non-metal

20
Q

What are compounds?

A

They are substances made of more than one type of atom.

21
Q

What are the properties of compounds?

A
  1. Cannot be separated by physical methods.
  2. They have completely new properties different from their individual elements
22
Q

What is the difference between compound and mixture?

A

Compound is chemically bonded and can only be separated through chemical methods while mixture can be separated by physical methods.
