States of Matter Flashcards
Properties of Solids
- Fixed shapes
- Fixed volume
- Cannot be compressed
Properties of Liquids
- Takes the shape of any container
- Can flow
- Cannot be compressed
- Fixed volume
Properties of Gases
- Takes the shape of any container
- No fixed volume (it’s always changing)
- Can flow
- Compressible
Particle theories of Solids
- Particles are arranged in a fixed pattern
- Particles stick together strongly and packed tightly
- Particles don’t move, they vibrate in place
Particle theories about Liquids
- Particles can touch each other
- Stick together weakly
- The particles can slide passed one another
Particle theories about Gases
- Particles don’t touch
- Particles are far apart
- Particles spread out by themselves
- Particles spread out and fill all spaces they are in
What happens when u heat solid in terms of particles
Solids expands. When the solid is heated heat energy is transferred to particles and vibrate more and take up more space.
What happens when u start melting solids
Particles vibrate more with more heat energy added and then the attractive forces between particles are broken.letting the particles to move freely.
What happens when u start heating liquids
Particles move more as more heat energy is transferred and the weak attractive forces between the particles are broken allowing them to move freely and escape as gas
What happens when gas cools
When gas particles lose heat, they move less and get closer together forming liquid.
What happens when liquid freezes
When liquid particles lose heat, they cannot move and flow anymore. They can only vibrate in a fixed position.
What processes are there in the water cycle
1) evaporation
2) transpiration
3) condensation
4)precipitation
5)percolation
6) surface run off
What is transpiration?
Evaporation of water in plants
What is precipitation?
When condensed water in cloulds become too heavy for air to hold them they fall back to earth as rain.
Examples: Rain, snow, hail and sleet
What is surface run off?
A rain that reaches the surface of land that flow across the ground
