Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
A cell is a basic building block of life
Cells can be divided into _____ types?
Plant cells and Animal cells
How many parts do Animal cells have?
What are they?
5 parts
Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Mitochondrion, Nucleus, Ribosomes
What does the cell membrane do?
1.It separates the cells inside from the outside
2.Allows material to go in and out of a cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Allows chemical reactions to happen
What does rhe Mitocondrian do?
It releases energy from food
Whar does the nucleus do?
It controls the activities of the cells (brain of the cell)
Hiw many parts does a plant cell have and what are they?
8 parts
Cell wall, Cell membrane,
Sap Vacuole, Mitochondion, Chloroplast, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Ribosomes
What does the vacuole do?
It stores solutions of sugar and other substances that dissoves in water as cell sap
What does the chloroplast do?
- Contains chlorophyll
- Performs photosynthesis to make food for the plant
What does the cell wall do?
- It gives shape to plant cells
- Strobg and stiff
- Made up of cellulose
Whats is the difference between prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell
Pro= no nucleus
Eu=nucleus
What does the ribosomes do?
It makes protein

What are specialised cells?
Is a cell that has a structure that suits itβs function
What are the traits of the red blood cell?
- Smaller than most other cells
- NO NUCLEUS
- Disc shaped
- Red colour cytoplasm = haemoglobin
What does neurons do?
They carry electrical signals from the brain to the body and vice versa
What are the traits of neuron?
- Very long cytoplasm called axon and one short cytoplasm called dendroids
What do ciliated cells do?
Ciliated cells trap dust and bacteria with mucus and sweeps it
What traits do ciliated cells have?
They have tiny hairs or tiny threads called cilia
What do root hair cells do?
- Absorb water from soil
- Each cell has long thin extension
What do palisade cells do?
- Found in leaves
- Contain chloroplast to do photosynthesis
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells
What is an organ?
It is a group of different kinds of tissues
What are organ systems?
A group of different organs working together
What do red blood cells do?
To carry oxygen around the body
