States of Matter Flashcards
What is Kinetic Theory?
An explanation of how particles of matter behave
3 Assumptions of Kinetic Theory
1) All matter is composed of small particles (atoms, molecules, and ions)
2) These particels are in costant motion
3) These particles are colliding with each other and the walls of their contanier
Describe a Solid
a solid has particelse that are closly packed together
most solids have a specific gemoetric arrangment
solid particals are constantly vibrating in place
Describe a Liquid
a liquid has particles that move more freely than solids, but closer together than a gas
a liquid fits its container
Describe a Gas
a gas has paritcles that are far apart, attractive forces between the particles are overcome
gases do not have a definite shape or volume
Describe Plasma
a matter consisting of positivly and negativly chargede particles, plasma is neutral
most common form of matter in the universe
