Buoyancy and Density Flashcards
1
Q
What is Buoyancy?
A
The ability of a fluid (liquid or gas) to exert an upward force on an object immersed in it.
2
Q
Buoyancy
When will an object float? Sink?
A
If the buoyant force is equal to or greater than the weight of the object, it will float. If the buoyant force is less it will sink.
3
Q
Density
An object will float if…
A
its density is less than the density of the fluid it is placed in.
If you shape a steel block into the shape of a hull and fill it with air, now the same mass will take up the volume (less than the density of water so the boat will float)
4
Q
Density
Equation:
We love density
A
Density= mass/volume
