Q

The Law of Conservation says:
1. Matter (atoms, molecules) can neither be created or destroyed.
2. The weight (mass) of the raw materials in a reaction must equal the weight of the product.
Put this in your own words…

A

So, things may change or get mixed up, but what you put in will still be in what you produce in the exact same amounts.

Only God can make something out of nothing and vice versa.

Q
In class you did a reaction activity with baking soda and an acid.
You made salt, carbon dioxide and water.

NaHCO3 + HCl makes NaCl + CO2 + H2O

How did this activity support the Law of Conservation

A

Every atom we began with was still present after the reaction.
1 Na atom, 2 H atoms, 1 C atom, 3 O atoms and one Cl atom is on each side of the reaction.
The weight we measured of our bottle of ingredients was exactly the same before and after we mixed our ingredients.
The chemical change rearranged the atoms into different molecules, but all of the same parts were there in the same amounts.
