Asteroid
A small rocky body that revolves around the sun.
Meteorite
A meteor that passes through Earth’s atmosphere without burning up completely.
The Big Bang Theory
The theory that states that the universe began with a tremendous explosion.

Sputnik
The first man made object in space. It started the space race.
Reflecting Telescope
A telescope that uses curved mirrors to gather and focus light.
Black Hole
An object with more than 3 solar masses squeezed into a ball only 10 kilometers across whose gravity is so strong that not even light can escape.
Axis
A straight line about which a body rotates.
Rotation
The spinning motion of a body on it’s axis. For the Earth, this is one day.
Supernova
The death of a large star by explosion.
Comet
A small body of ice, rock, and cosmic dust, loosely packed together, that gives off gas and dust in the form of a tail as it passes close to the sun.
Constellation
A section of the sky that contains a recognizable star pattern.

Ellipse
A closed curve in which the sum of the distance from the edge of the curve to two points inside the ellipse is always the same.
Solar Eclipse
An event in which the shadow of the moon falls on the Earth’s surface.
