States Of Matter Flashcards
What is Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
What is Mass
Mass is the amount of matter in an object
What are the properties of solids
- Definite Shape
- Definite volume
3.cannot be compressed - Cannot flow
3 states of matter
Solid liquid gas
Properties of liquids
- Liquids have no definite shape
- Liquids have a definite volume
- Liquids cannot be compressed
- Liquids can flow
Property’s of gas
- Gases have no definite shape
- Gases have no definite volume
- Gases can be compressed
- Gases can flow
Energy
In order for a substance to change (from a solid to a liquid) it need heat energy
As a substance changes state it uses latent heat. There is no change to temperature, but the state of the material changes.
Whats melting point boiling point and condensation ?
Melting point is when both the solid and liquid state exist together ( changing from solid to liquid)
_________________________________________________
Boiling point of a liquid is when evaporation begins to happen throughout the liquid (changing from a liquid to gas)
_________________________________________________
Condensation is the changing of a gas to a liquid
Sublimation
Some substances do not change from a solid to a liquid when they melt, they change straight from a solid to a gas.
E.g solid carbon dioxide is known as dry ice and turns into a gas when heated
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
E.g spray perfume in one corner of the room
Forth state of matter
Plasma is the fourth state of matter, like gas, but can conduct electricity
It is very similar to a gas, in fact plasma is a gas that can carry an electric charge. Plasma particles spread out and move around randomly, but unlike gas, plasma has the ability to conduct electricity
