Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Physical change
No change in the particle arrangement and energy, easy to reverse eg. mixing water and salt.
Chemical change
a new substance is formed. Not easy to reverse. Chemical reaction like iron nails rusting.
During a chemical reaction
The atoms rearrange to form a new substance. Might be seen by colour change, temperature change, light being emitted or bubbles
The law of conservation of mass
states that matter cannot be created or destroyed but can change from one form to another.
In both physical and chemical change
Filtration
Used to separate small insoluble solids (do not dissolve in a liquid) from a liquid using by using a filter paper and a funnel to trap solids
Evaporation
Used to separate soluble liquids from a solution by evaporating off the liquid to leave the solids e.g salt water pg 169
Distillation
Used to separate with different boiling points such as alcohol (boils at 78) and water boils at (100) . Also used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid (e.g seawater) to give a pure sample of each (pg.169)
Insoluble
Does not dissolve in liquid
Soluble
Dissolves in liquid
