States of matter Flashcards
solid
Particles close together. Firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid. Can’t move but can vibrate
Liquid
a substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, having a consistency like that of water or oil. Would fill the bottom of a container
Gas
Particles move freely around the space. Has no fixed shape.
Particles
A tiny part of matter. Often joins other particles to make something much bigger.
State
Describes the condition that something is in at that particular time. These can change e.g. liquid changes to gas in the water cycle.
Temperature
How hot or cold something is. Often measure in degrees celsius
Melt
A solid turning into a liquid through heating. Particles start to move quicker.
Melting point of water
0 degrees Celsius
Freezing
A liquid turning into a solid through cooling. Particles move slower.
Freezing point of water
Anything less than 0 degrees celsius
1064 degrees C
Melting point of gold
Boiling
This is when a liquid turns into a gas. The particles move faster and faster as the heat goes up.
Boiling point of water
100 Degrees Celsius
Condensation
When a gas turns back into a liquid.
Thermometer
Something that is used to measure temperature.
