Electricity Flashcards
What is mains electricity?
Electricity produced in power stations and carried to places, such as plug sockets in our homes, by overhead power lines.
What do you know about a battery operated appliance?
It would have a portable electricity supply. The battery contains chemicals which react in a special way to produce an electric current.
What is a series circuit?
A series circuit is made up of components, such as a battery, wires, bulbs, switches, and they placed one after another to form a complete loop.
If the electrical current cannot go around in a loop then the component (e.g. bulb) won’t switch on.
What is a component?
A component is one of the parts of the circuit. For example, bulb, battery, wire, motor, buzzer.
What is a switch and how does it work?
A switch can turn the circuit on and off. The switch breaks the loop when it is turned off. When the switch is pressed, the circuit becomes a full loop and the circuit is on.
What is a cell?
A cell is a scientific word for a battery.
What is a wire?
A wire is used to connect the components together in a circuit.
What is an electrical insulator?
It is a material which does not allow electricity to flow through it easily. They can be used to stop electrical shocks.
Insulators would include wood, plastic, rubber, paper, glass and diamond.
What is an electrical conductor?
A material that allows electricity to pass through easily. Wires must be made of a material that will let the current flow from one component to the next.
These materials include aluminium, silver, copper, gold, steel and sea water.
