States Of Matter Flashcards
How are the particles in a solid arranged?
They are packed tightly, and vibrate back and forth which makes them have a definite volume.
What is a solid?
A state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume.
What is a crystalline solid?
A solid that is made up of crystals.
What are some examples of crystalline solids?
Salt, sugar, and snow.
What is an amorphous solid?
A solid in which the particles are not arranged in a particular pattern.
What are some examples of amorphous solids?
Plastic, rubber, and glass.
How do the solids differ?
Amorphous solids don’t melt at a specific temperature when heated. Crystalline solids do.
What is a liquid?
A state of matter that has no definite shape, but a definite volume.
How are the particles in a liquid arranged?
Almost exactly like a solid, but they love around freely.
What is a fluid?
A substance that flows.
What is surface tension?
The result of an inward pull among the molecules of a liquid that brings the molecules on the surface closer together.
What is viscosity?
A liquid’s resistance to flowing.
What is a gas?
A state of matter that has no definite shape or volume.
How are the particles of a gas arranged?
They spread apart filling all the space and move freely.
