states of matter Flashcards
what volumes of state of matter are equal?
liquids and solids
how are the particles of gas spaced out?
in three dimensions- 10x10x10
so they are 1000 times less dense then solids and liquids but can be compressed into a smaller space
what does the energy imparted onto ice do to it to melt?
it speeds up the vibrations until it breaks the rigid bonds causing them to break
what is the state of solid to liquid called?
melting
what is the state change of liquid to gas called?
evaporation or boiling
how does evaporation work?
the particles nearest to the surface of a liquid sometimes have enough energy to shoot up and not return to the liquid. this in turn causes the quantity of the liquid to decrease.
what is the difference between boiling and evaporation?
boiling is the sped up version of evaporation. this is because in boiling energy (heat) id applied directly to the liquid causing the particles to shoot up quicker
at what temperature in water does it change from a solid to a liquid?
0°C
what temperature does liquid change to gas?
100°C
