Atoms Flashcards
What is the average radius of an atom?
0.1 nanometers (1x10-10m)
Give key parts and functions of an atoms nucleus-
The nucleus is in the middle of the atom and contains protons and neutrons. The nucleus has a radius of around 1 x 10-14m and has a positive charge due to the protons. it makes up almost the whole mass of the atom.
Give key functions of the electrons in an atom-
The electrons move around the nucleus in electron shells (levels). They are negatively charged and have almost no mass.
Where can you find the atomic number and mass number of an atom?
On its nuclear symbol.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons the atom.
What is the mass number of an atom?
Number of protons + the number of neutrons
What is the number of neutrons?
The mass number- atomic number
What charge are atoms?
Atoms have no charge as the protons and electrons are always the same so they balance each other out.
What is an ion?
An ion is a group of atoms that has lost or gained electrons.
how do atoms make molecules?
they bond together to make molecules
how is the molecule H2O made?
2 hydrogen atoms bond with 1 oxygen atom
what is the difference between molecules and elements?
molecules are different types of atoms that have bonded together whereas elements are made up of one type of atom
what is the smallest type of atom?
hydrogen, which us made up of one proton in the nucleus and one in electron in the outside orbit
