States of consciousness Flashcards
Self-awareness is
how we know that we are
separate from other people.
It makes us seperate from others
Consiousness
is self awareness
-Allows us to make choices and consider our actions.
Altered states of consciousness
can be reached through sleeping, dreaming, being
hypnotized, meditating, daydreaming and
taking psychoactive drugs.
sleep-wake cycle
biological rhythm, or a regularly recurring pattern. More specifically, it’s a 24-hour cycle or
circadian rhythm that’s linked to daylight
and darkness.
EEG (electroencephalogram)
this machine could measure electrical activity in your
brain.
Stage 1 Sleep
This is the initial stage when you start feeling drowsy and your body begins to relax.
Your brain waves slow down, transitioning from beta waves (awake) to alpha and theta waves (drowsy).
During this stage, you may experience hypnagogic hallucinations or sudden muscle twitches known as myoclonic jerks.
Stage 2 Sleep
In this stage, you’re still fairly light asleep, but you’re less aware of your surroundings.
Brain waves become more synchronized with occasional bursts of rapid brain activity called sleep spindles.
Your heart rate and body temperature decrease, and you’re less likely to wake up from minor disturbances.
Stage 3 Sleep
AKA slow-wave sleep, this is the stage where your body and mind undergo restorative processes.
Brain waves become dominated by slow delta waves, and it’s harder to wake up during this stage.
This is when your body repairs tissues, strengthens the immune system, and consolidates memories.
Stage 4 Sleep
a continuation of deep sleep, with even more intense delta wave activity.
It’s the most challenging stage to wake up from, and sleepwalking and night terrors may occur during this time.
Stage 5 - REM Sleep (Rapid Eye Movement):
When REM, or rapid eye movement happens, your closed eyes moveback and forth and you dream. Your
breathing and heart rate increase, although on the outside you appear calm and asleep.
after rem you may…
complete up to 6 90 minute sleep cycles
3 forms of Dream Interpretation
Psychoanalytic Theory
* Activation-Synthesis Theory
* Psychotherapeutic Theory
Psychoanalytic theory
Psychoanalytic theory, by Sigmund Freud, is about how unconscious thoughts and early experiences affect our behavior and personality. It’s a key idea in psychology.
Activation Synthesis
a theory in psychology that suggests dreams are random brain activity (activation) during sleep, and the brain attempts to make sense of this activity by creating dream experiences (synthesis).
Psychotherapeutic theory
Psychotherapeutic theory is an approach in psychology that involves talking therapy to help people with emotional or psychological issues. It’s a way to understand and address mental and emotional problems through conversations with trained therapists.
