States, Mixtures + Separation - Mixtures Flashcards
1
Q
What is a mixture
A
A mixture consists of two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined together. The chemical properties of each substance in the mixture are unchanged.
2
Q
How can you separate mixtures physically
A
With physical processes such as filtration, crystallisation, simple/fractional distillation and chromatography.
These are physical, thus do not consist of chemical reactions and no new substances are made
3
Q
State examples of each separation technique
A
Filtration + Crystallisation - separate rock salt
Fractional distillation - making of crude oil
Chromatography - separating different dyes in an ink
