What is a state?
States possess a permanent population, defined territory and recongnised sovereignty.
What is a nation?
Refers to a group of people claiming common bonds based on culture, language and hisotry. Some nations have their own state, such as the Japanese, while others want their own state, like the Tibetans or Kurds.
Nations with States
South Korea, Iceland, Japan.
Nations without States
Kurds, Tibetans, Palestinians, Hong Kong, Uyghur muslims.
What is power and where does it come from
Power refers to the ability of one global actor to influence others. Power can be influenced in a range of types. Military Power, diplomatic power, economical power, political power and cultural power.
What is military (physical) power
It is the capacity for violence (police or milita) and is power at its most primal.
What is economic power
Wealth can buy results and it can buy almost any other type of power.
What is political power
The power of law and beurocracy and it compels people to do or not do certain things. This can be in a democracy where theoretically the people have the power or in a dictatorship, where the state controls the people by force.
What is cultural power
Social norms; what other people think is okay. They operate peer to peer, which is different to a government.
What are the 3 laws of power
Power is never static
Power is like water, it flows like a current.
Power compounds
What is sovereignty
The authority of a state to govern itself or another state. It is the main differentiation between what makes a nation and what makes a state. Sovereignty of a state must also be recognised by other states.
What rights does soevereignty give a state
The right to raise an army and defend borders, to tax citizens, to organise trade, to legislate laws. However, there are limitations.
