What is the difference between state and nation?
State has sovereignty (absolute power), is political in nature
Nation has identity (ethnic, cultural, etc.), is cultural in nature
What are the 4 elements of state?
- People
- Territory
- Government
- Sovereignty

People
(No strict requirement on number, as long as its self sufficient)
This is a system of social control under which has the rights to make laws and the right to enforce them and is vested on a particular group of society. It’s also the institution through which society makes and enforces its public policies
Government
This is the land which is controlled by a particular country
Territory
What are the 3 inherent powers of the state?
- Police Power
- Eminent Domain
- Taxation
What are the 2 dimensions of sovereignty?
Internal-Ruling over your people
External-Being able to be autonomous independent of other states
This power of the state allows it to enact and enforce the law for the regulation of public order and welfare.
Police Power
This power of the state allows it to acquire private property upon payment of just compensation for some intended public use.
Eminent Domain
