Start of psychology Flashcards
What is an independent measure?
When a group of participants are split into each condition and only tested for one
What is a repeated measure?
When the whole group of participants does a condition at the same time then does the other ones as well
What is matched groups?
When there are two separate groups but they are split due to individual qualities
What is a lab experiment
A laboratory experiment in psychology is when an experimenter manipulates one or more independent variables and measures the effects on the dependent variable under controlled conditions
What is a field experiment
A field experiment in psychology that takes place in a natural, under real-life is an experiment when the researcher manipulates one or more independent variables and measures the effects on the dependent variable however, experimenter has less control under the extraneous variables as the people do not know they are being studied
What is a Natural experiment
A natural experiment is when the researcher observes the effects in a naturally occurring setting or situation on the dependent variable without manipulating and variables.
What is an extraneous variable
An extraneous variable is anything that isn’t the independent variable that could effect the outcomes of the study
What is a directional hypothesis
When the direction of the results is predicted.
What is a non- directional hypothesis
A change or difference is predicted but a direction is not
specified
What is an independent variable
The variable that is manipulated or changed by the researcher to measure the effect on the DV.
What is a dependent variable
The variable that is measured. Any effect that is measured should have been caused by the IV.
