When was the Tehran Conference
1943 Nov 28th - Dec 1st
Name 3 decisions made at the Tehran Cknference
- USA and Britain would make a second front to split German defences and take pressure off USSR
- USSR would declare war on Japan once Germany was defeated
- Poland should be given more land from Germany but then give some to USSR
When was the Yalta Conference
4th to the 11th February 1945
Name five decisions made at the Yalta conference
- the nazi party would be banned and war criminals would be tried
- the UN would be made to replace the League of Nations because they needed more voting rights
- Germany would reduce in size and pay lots of reparations
- plans were begun to divide Germany after the war and rebuild Europe
- the USSR would declare war on Japan 3 months after Germany was defeated
- USSR wanted Poland to be in the Soviet Sphere of Influence
What’s a sphere of influence
Where a country can gain respect for their country and have a metaphoric bubble around them
When was the Potsdam conference
1945 July and August
Name five decisions made at Potsdam
- there will be a council of foreign ministers to discuss the rebuilding of Europe
- ban the Nazi party and prosecute the surviving Nazi criminals
- reduce the size of Germany
- divide Germany into four zones by USA USSR Britian and France
- divide Berlin into four zones despite being in USSRs zone
- give USSR a quarter of everyone’s equipment in the other three zones because their quarter was quite weak
What was Churchills idea of the iron curtain
It meant that Europe is being metaphorically split and is breaking the world and feels like there are different rules on each half
What was the long telegram
It was sent from USSR to USA in 1946 to threaten USA and saying he is determined to stop capitalism and develop Russia’s military power and for USA to seek communism
What was Novikov’s Telegram
It was from USA to USSR in 1946 and Truman was saying that he wanted to dominate the world and was no longer interested to cooperate with USSR and USA was prepared to go to war with them
Name five things mentioned in the Truman Doctrine
- the world is becoming more divided and capitalism and communism are at opposition
- communism shouldn’t be allowed to grow and gain territory
- America would send troops and economic resources to help governments that were threatened by communism
- America had a responsibility to fight for liberty
- the world had a choice between communist tyranny and democratic freedom
What was the Marshall plan
USA were willing to pay $13 billion to any European countries which were under threat and were need of a Marshall aid. Also USA will share their resources and trade freely. They were doing this to gain trust from other countries and convince them not to be communist
