Q

What key is this piece?

STARS

A

It is made up of pitch class sets.

meaning there is a set number of notes for each sections. And only those notes are used. There are also extra notes. (for example d-flat is section A) these help to make the sections sound complete.

The music is pointillist which means it is quite random, but when heard as a whole there are clear sequences and patterns. Sculthorpes use of this technique could be reflective of stars, which look quite random, but are set out in patterns.
