Stars Flashcards
Low Mass Stars
1-7x Solar Mass!
High Mass Stars
8-20x Solar Mass!
Mass relates to Fusion Rate, Temperature and Pressure how?
Directly related! Low mass, low fusion rate, low temp, low pressure.
Stellar Nebula
Protostar! Also, star nursery. Attempts to achieve equilibrium between gravity, core pressure, and temperature!
Main Sequence Star
Average or Massive for low and high mass stars respectively! Nuclear fusion! H to He
Massive stars also produce heavy metals that regulate accretion rates of normal stars.
Red Giant
Loss of fuel in the core means bigger star! Up to 1000x more, in fact.
Low Mass.
Red Supergiant
Biggest stars in the universe with a short life. Forms near the end of star life! 100x bigger than sun Red- 10x solar mass, cooler Blue- 8x solar mass, hotter High Mass.
Planetary Nebula
No energy left, so time to shed layers and get complex.
Low Mass.
Supernova
Stellar explosion triggered by loss of remaining fuel, enriches interstellar medium!
Fusion for a iron.
Instantaneous absorption of energy, rapid collapse, KABOOM
High Mass.
White Dwarf
Very dense, end stage star. Becomes a black dwarf later on.
Low Mass.
Neutron Star
Remnant of supernova that ejects particles.
1.5-2.8 solar mass. Very dense, 100 B surface gravity.
Solid core, liquid interior
Spins very fast and has high magnetic field!
DOESNT GLOW ITS SO BURNT OUT
Mostly neutrons.
High Mass.
Pulsar
Highly magnetized, spinning neutron star.
Emits electromagnetic radiation energy in pulses.
High Mass.
Black Hole
Other possibility for High Mass star.
Size is uncertain and mass is contained in singularity.
Has a very strong gravity not even light can escape, called event horizon.
3-12 solar mass, can only be formed by stars >20 solar mass
Time decreases as gravity increases.
Spaghettification
Stretching in black hole
Class Order from Hottest to Coolest
