Q

How is Staph Aureus differentiated from Staph epidermidis and Staph Saprophyticus?

A

Since Staph epidermidis and Staph Saprophyticus also test positive for catalase, coagulase test is done to differentiate. When Staph Aureus bacteria is stirred in a liquid emulsion and few drops of plasma are added, the fibrinogen in the plasma will be converted into sticky fibrin clumps by coagulase which is produced by Staph Aureus, and not by Staph epidermidis and Saprophyticus.

Q

What happens if Staph Aureus infects the bone?

A

It can cause osteomyelitis

17
Q

What happens if Staph aureus infects the joint space?

A

It can cause septic arthritis.

18
Q

What happens if Staph Aureus infects the blood?

A

It can cause a septic thrombophlebitis - an infected blood clot.

19
Q

What happens if Staph Aureus reaches the CNS from the blood stream?

A

It can cause bacterial meningitis or an epidural abscess in the spine.

20
Q

What happens if Staph Aureus reaches the lungs?

A

It can cause severe pneumonia

21
Q

What happens if Staph Aureus reaches the heart?

A

It can start to grow on the heart valves in clumps called vegetations - damaging the valves - a process called infective endocarditis.

Bits of the vegetations can then chip off and embolize further causing other local infections around the body.
