Adenovirus Flashcards
What are adenoviruses?
A group of viruses that cause respiratory, gastrointestinal and genitourinary infections
What are the 4 genera of adenovirus?
- Mastadenovirus (Mammals, including humans)
- .Aviadenovirus (Birds)
- Atadenovirus (Birds, mammals, reptiles, marsupial)
- Siadenovirus (Reptiles, birds)
What is the classification of adenoviruses?
Baltimore class 1
How does adenovirus transmission occur?
It is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets when one coughs or sneezes or by fecal oral route.
Can also be transmitted from mother to infant via birth canal or following organ transplant from infected donor
How many serotypes does adenovirus have?
51
What are the treatments for adenovirus?
There are no specific treatments however immunocompromised patients may receive antiviral therapy
How does Cidofovir work?
It is a nucleotide analog of cytosine and it inhibits the viral DNA polymerase and viral replication by competitive incorporation of its active metabolite codofovir diphosphate into the viral DNA chain.
This disrupts its synthesis and replication
What are the serological investigations done for diagnosis of Adenovirus?
Virus is isolated from clinical samples like faeces, pharyngeal swabs and conjunctival swabs
It can be cultured on human diplo fibroblast. HeLa cervical cancer and Hep-2 epithelial cells
What are Rapid identification tests for adenovirus?
Immunofluorescence
Subtyping by hemagglutination inhibition test with antisera
What are the 4 groups of viruses?
Adenoviruses
Coronaviruses
Severe Acute respiratory syndrome
Rhinoviruses
