Standing waves on a string Flashcards
What are standing waves?
Standing waves are two waves that travel in opposing directions which have fixed points at which there is no oscillation at all (nodes) and then fixed points where the peak oscillation shifts from crest to trough (anti-nodes)
How are standing waves on a string produced?
Standing waves on a string are produced by exposing it to a forced vibration with a driving frequency equal to one of its natural frequencies.
What is the lowest natural frequency of a standing wave called?
The first harmonic / fundamental mode.
Formula for wavelength of fundamental mode of a standing wave on a string
λ1= 2L
Formula for fundamental frequency of a standing wave on a string
f1= v/λ
What does the fundamental mode correspond to?
(1/2)λ
How to find any other harmonic?
Multiply f1 by n
Variables that affect the speed of a standing wave on a string?
Force tension of the string and mass of string per metre.
