What does MARPOL stand for and what are the 6 annex’s?
‘MARINE POLUTION’

What is Gross tonnage, and Net tonnage
GT - Total interior volume
NT - Total cargo colume
What is SOLAS and Where does it come from?
SAFETY OF LIFE AT SEA
Convention under IMO. Flag states are responsible for ensuring compliance with its requirements.
What does SOLAS encompass?
Safety equipment to be carried, Equipment standards, Fire protection detection and extinction, LSA, Safe ship operations etc.
What is the Standardised general alarm
7 short 1 long
What is the fire alarm?
Usually continuous ringing of the ships alarm system however it can vary from ship to ship and should be specified on the muster list.
What frequency does an EPIRB transmit on?
406MHz.
What is the emergency signal for abandon ship?
Required to be a verbal command by the master
Which vessels are required to have a garbage disposal plan?
Any vessel over 100GT or with more than 15 pax
Which vessels are required to have a garbage disposal record book?
Any vessel over 400GT.
How often do abandon ship and fire drills need to be carried out on a passenger ship?
SOLAS regulation 25 states. ONCE A WEEK. All crew must be involved at least once a month. If 25% of crew haven’t taken part in a drill over the last month. One must be carried out before leaving port.
When should a new crew member receive initial induction training?
As soon as possible but is required to be within 24 hrs.
What is an SMS
Safety management system, run under ISM. Includes SOP’s, training, maintenance etc
What is a MGN, MSN, MIN
MGN (marine guidance notice) Significant guidance and advice relating to the improvement of safety or pollution
MSN (merchant shipping notice) , IMPORTANT INFO, mandatory info that must be complied with under UK law.
MIN (marine information notice) targeted towards a more limited audience.
What is some equipment a life raft must contain
Radar reflector, fishing gear (moral), first aid kit, sea sick medication, knife with floating Handel, sponges, sea anchors, whistle or equivalent, signalling mirror, 1.5L of water pp, 6 hand flares, 2 smoke, 4 rocket, three tin openers, rustproof drinking vessel, thermal aids.
SART (what does it stand for, what picks it up, what should you not use with it in a liferaft)
Search and rescue transponder, X band radar (3cm), Should not use a radar reflector at same time.
How would you tow a liferaft with a life boat in windy conditions
Across the wind
What are the steps you would make when entering restricted visibility
Call master
Fix position
Engines ready
Echo sounder
Radar, plot targets ensure set up and both are on and primary is on S band

What are some of the checks you would make in prep for heavy weather
-watertight integrity
-reduce FSE, tank assessments, scuppers/freeing ports, bilges.

At least once every two months
What are the Nz requirements for sewage discharge
Must not discharge untreated sewage from within 500 metres from land (mean high water spring) in water less than 5 metres deep. within 500 metres from a marine farm or mataitai (traditional food collection) reserve, or 200m from marine reserve. (EXCEPT FIORDLAND).
With treatment system A - not within 100m of marine farm (or in Fiordland)
B - 500m as above
What is UNCLOS
United Nations convention of law on the sea. Determines territorial waters etc. (12NM usually)
