what variable can determine a person’s standard of living in a country?
poverty rates; quality of the environment; safety of people; income levels; access to quality education; access to quality healthcare; infrastructure in a region or country.

the way that people live.
what do we look at if we look at how lifestyles have changed over a period of years?
physical changes
social changes
economic changes

1) self-sufficient societies

what is a self-sufficient society?
a society that is able to sustain itself and requires no support from and interaction with others to survive.
self-sufficient societies….
1) will produce everything that is needed without the help of others
2) live of the land
what are the names of groups trying to become self-sufficient in modern times?
homesteading [Thailand]
kibbutz [Israel]
amish people [America]
people living off the grid [South Africa]
what does it mean when a region or country achieves autarky?
when a community or country that is self-sufficient to the degree that they do not need to trade with anybody in the region or in the world.
what will people living in an autarky state do?
1) share all resources as nobody will work from themselves.
2) place the interest of the community before the needs of individuals.
3) no need to use money to buy goods or services as bartering will be used.
how can bartering be defined?
the exchange of goods or services without the use of money.
what did the transition from self-sufficient to a manufacturing process enable people to do?
the transition from living self-sufficiently to new manufacturing processes enabled people to produce more than what they needed and to sell the excess production to other people
define a rural society.
a society that is relatively small in the number of people living in a relatively large area.
in a traditional rural society…
1) have a simpler lifestyle.
2) the trend is to follow a communal lifestyle.
3) to some degree self-sufficient when it comes to housing and food, but they do need money to buy clothes,shoes, and to send their children to school.
4) breadwinners often leave to find work in towns and cities and then send money home to family members for support.
5) low levels of education.
6) access to healthcare and other modern infrastructure is limited.
