Standard form

A

A form in which numbers are recorded as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of ten.

Example: 193 in standard index form is recorded as 1.93 × 10^2.

A

The position of a digit to the right of a decimal point.

Powers

A

The power of a number shows you how many times to use the number in a multiplication.

It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number.

Example: 8^2 = 8 × 8 =64

Power (of ten)

A

100 (i.e. 10^2 or 10 x 10) is the second power of 10, 1000 (i.e.10^3 or 10 x 10 x 10) is the third power of 10 etc.

Powers of other numbers are defined in the same way. Example: 2 (2^1), 4 (2^2), 8 (2^3), 16 (2^4) etc are powers of 2.

A negative power represents the reciprocal. Example: x^−1 = ^1/_x

By convention any number or variable to the power 0 equals 1. Example: x^0 = 1
