Fractions Flashcards
Fraction
The result of dividing one integer by a second integer, which must be non-zero. The dividend is the numerator and the non-zero divisor is the denominator.
Examples of fractions:
1/3, 4/5, 12/25, 1/2
Denominator
In fractions, the number written below the line
Example: In the fraction 2/3, the denominator is 3.
Numerator
In fractions, the number written on the top
Example: In the fraction 2/3, the numerator is 2.
More than
A symbol used to indicate one number is larger than another, with the larger number given first.
For example, 8 is more than 6 can be written as 8 > 6
Less than
A symbol used to indicate one number is smaller than another, with the smaller number given first.
For example, 6 is less than 8 can be written as 6 < 8
Ascending
Numbers are said to be in ascending order when they are arranged from the smallest to the largest number.
Descending
Numbers are said to be arranged in descending order if they are arranged from largest to smallest.
The numbers would be decreasing.
Improper Fraction
An improper fraction has a numerator that is greater than its denominator.
Example: 9/4 is improper and could be expressed as the mixed number 2 1/4
Equivalent fractions
Fraction with the same value as another.
Example:
6/12 = 3/6 = 1/2
These are equivalent fractions.
Mixed Number
A whole number and a fractional part expressed as a common fraction.
Example: 1 2/3 is a mixed number. Also known as a mixed fraction.
Lowest Common Multiple
The lowest common multiple is the lowest number that is a multiple of all the given numbers.
For example, the LCM of 3, 4 and 6 is 12. The LCM of 6 and 8 is 24.
Reciprocal
The multiplicative inverse of any non-zero number.
Example: 1/3 is the reciprocal of 3. Any number multiplied by its reciprocal gives 1. Example 1/3 x 3 = 1
