What do Stairwell Protection Teams do?
SPT are deployed to ensure the safety of occupants who may be leaving the building and to maintain conditions in the stairwell incase evacuation is needed.
-Search for occupants
-Prepare/Maintain stairwells
-Assist with evacuation and rescue
-Provide advice to occupants
-Monitor and report conditions in corridors and lobbies
-Monitor people evacuating
What must be in place when SPTs are deployed?
-SPTs must be briefed on the tactical plan, evacuation strategy and any significant change to either.
-Must be equipped with BA (not under air)
-Radio Comms (to safety officer and ECO)
-Portable gas monitoring
-Thermal imager
-Smoke blocking equipment (curtains)
-Smoke hoods
-Provision/access to instigate PPV
-Accompanied by Safety Officer within stairwell (unless BA under air)
- Recorded on separate Entry Control Board
-Have dedicated Emergency Team specifically for SPTs
- Prior to entering stairwell SPT must insert filled tallies into designated Entry Control Board (time in is only filled when BA decide to go under air)
-SPTs are to be recorded and counted on entry control board as being ‘Under Air’
- Should SPTs encounter irrespirable air/ hazardous conditions they are to withdraw to clean air to start up and inform ECO to calculate accurate duration times.
-In event SPTs lose communication they are to return to Bridghead ECO
-Safety Officers must return to Bridghead if SPTs start up.
