Stains Flashcards
Giemsa stain
Chlamydia, Borrelia, Rickettsiae, Trypanosomes, Plasmodium (malaria)
Periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS)
Stains glycogen, mucopolysaccharides
Used to diagnose Whipple disease (Tropheryma whipplei)
Also stains unsecreted A1AT in hepatocytes in A1AT deficiency
Ziehl-Neelsen (carbolfuchsin)
Stains acid-fact organisms (Nocardia, Mycobacterium)
High lipid content in Mycobacteria cell wall detected by carbolfuchsin
Fluorescent antibody staining and dark-field microscopy
Treponema
India ink stain
Cryptococcus neoformans (mucicarmine can also be used to stain thick polysaccharide capsule red)
Silver stain
Fungi (e.g. Pneumocystis), Legionella, H. Pylori, Borrelia
Prussian blue stain
Distinguishes iron (blue) from lipofuscin in hepatocytes
Hemochromatosis; Sideroblastic anemia
GFAP
Intermediate filament of neuroglia (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells)
Nissl substance
Cell bodies and dendrites of neurons (stains RER)
Keratin
Intermediate filament of epithelial cells
Desmin
Intermediate filaments of muscle cells (e.g. rhabdomyosarcoma)
Gomori trichrome stain
Blotchy red muscle fibers reveal mitochrondral myopathies
Mucicarmine
Cryptococcus neoformans
Vimentin
Intermediate filament of mesenchyme
Neurofilament
Intermediate filament of neurons
